Interview with Josh Spear, Indie Publisher

by Industrial Brand in Creative Thinking

Spear_1

Spear After growing tiresome of traditional academia and journalism’s narrow view of the blogsphere, Josh Spear took it upon himself to create his own bog, Joshspear.com. In barely two years, his blog has become a daily destination for culture junkies and industry execs seeking inspiration. PSFK had the opportunity to chat with Josh and get his take on the current state of independent publishing and hear more about his new consulting agency, Spear Creative Group and its digital marketing counterpart SparkMedium.

1. There seems to have been so many changes in independent media and publishing. What’s changed in your world – in media and personally?

More garbage. More spotlights, lower wattage. Don’t get me wrong: Independent publishing is wonderful, but online it’s becoming a bit of a nuisance. I get emails everyday from publishers of new sites claiming they are going to be the ‘new hot shit’. Most of the time their content isn’t only lackluster, but it lacks consistency. The successful blogs online have produced quality content day after day for years. I see mainstream media eating up a lot of this so called ‘indie media world,’ adopting blogs, podcasts, etc. As long as the author makes the content remarkable I don’t care who publishes it. For me, independent publishing remains the same. I still strive to publish with the mantra: content is (and always will be) king.

Pulsating Buildings

by Piers Fawkes in Brand Experience, Creative Thinking

Images Mint KobeA commercial complex in Kobe has been fitted with a lighting system that translates cosmic energy waves into pulsating blue light. Pink Tentacle reports:

Called “Super Nova,” the lighting system consists of 2,880 blue LEDs arranged in two columns spanning the height of the 18-story building’s west wall. The embedded lights are activated by sensors that detect cosmic rays. According to Takuro Osaka, the University of Tsukuba Graduate School professor who designed the system, the brightness of the blue lights fluctuates according to the intensity of the detected cosmic rays, giving the building an ever-changing magical glow.

Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?

by Piers Fawkes in Creative Thinking

ferreft mediaBecause we’d like to know. Well, not really PSFK but the little ad sales ferrets at FederatedMedia who want to wriggle up the trouser-legs of brands, round their backs and then on their bare necks with those tickly little feet in order to reach the brands’ ears so that they can convince ‘em that PSFK and some other odd sites are worth dropping a wad on. Because you all click on banner-ads don’t you….

Go on, do us a favor. We’ve given the little furry blighters some stick recently - but maybe it’s time to play along and give them a quick stroke.

Media Ideas: Royal

by Piers Fawkes in Media Planning & Strategy, Youth Marketing

Royal Magazine

Editor David Gensler likes breaking publishing rules. For a start, when he found he had too much content for Issue 8 of his Royal Magazine, he decided to split it in half and put each half in two magazines and publish them simultaneously. Also, Gensler ignores the idea of neutrality by unabashedly writing about his friends and people he wants as friends. Basically, he likes what his friends are doing and he wants to tell the world - at 1,000 mph - about them.

Issue 8 is entitled ‘Design In Conflict’ where the magazine looks at how Design is obsessed with the concept of new. The letter from the editor reads:

The obsession with the new is devouring value and reason. We have investigated collisions in the past, looking for a fertile place that could conceive progress. We now dig deeper - studying competitiveness, co-operation and ultimately conflict.

Issue 9 is entitled ‘Looking Forward To Back In The Day’ and celebrates independent creative business. The letter reads:

This issue is dedicated to independence. From fledgling media companies, to artists, poets, writers, athletes, entertainers and visionaries. These people don’t punch a clock and wait around for corporate promotions and vacations - they have blazed their own paths and continue to push the limits, while inspiring us to push ourselves.

Issue 9 also features a Q&A with PSFK. You’ve got to keep your friends close, no?

Media Ideas: Theme, US/Global

by Piers Fawkes in Influencer Targeting, Media Planning & Strategy

Theme Magazine

The latest issue of one of our favorite magazines has landed on our desks - and the team at Theme have continued to evolve what was already an inspirational read.

The Fall 06 issue of the Asian Culture quarterly is entitled Performance and the editors, Jiae and John, write in their letter:

A good performance can move and entertain an audience; a great performance can inspire awe. The Boredoms, Daewon Song, Min Tanaka and Li Wei don’t have much in common except that at one point in time, each gave a performance that made someone’s hair stand on end, shot shivers down the spine.

In each issue of Theme, Jiae and John present stories of lives that will inspire you in many ways.

Available on newstands - but there is a special deal for PSFK readers: a free year’s subscription. Theme needs people to complete an online survey (only 4 questions). In exchange they will give the respondents a full year’s extension on their existing subscription, or if they don’t have a subscription, they will offer them a free year’s worth of Theme, just for completing the survey!
