Media Ideas: Royal

by Piers Fawkes

Royal Magazine

Editor David Gensler likes breaking publishing rules. For a start, when he found he had too much content for Issue 8 of his Royal Magazine, he decided to split it in half and put each half in two magazines and publish them simultaneously. Also, Gensler ignores the idea of neutrality by unabashedly writing about his friends and people he wants as friends. Basically, he likes what his friends are doing and he wants to tell the world - at 1,000 mph - about them.

Issue 8 is entitled ‘Design In Conflict’ where the magazine looks at how Design is obsessed with the concept of new. The letter from the editor reads:

The obsession with the new is devouring value and reason. We have investigated collisions in the past, looking for a fertile place that could conceive progress. We now dig deeper - studying competitiveness, co-operation and ultimately conflict.

Issue 9 is entitled ‘Looking Forward To Back In The Day’ and celebrates independent creative business. The letter reads:

This issue is dedicated to independence. From fledgling media companies, to artists, poets, writers, athletes, entertainers and visionaries. These people don’t punch a clock and wait around for corporate promotions and vacations - they have blazed their own paths and continue to push the limits, while inspiring us to push ourselves.

Issue 9 also features a Q&A with PSFK. You’ve got to keep your friends close, no?
