Mobile’s Killer App
Europe has had 3G phones since the beginning of this decade, however, the phone networks and handset makers haven’t yet worked out how best to unleash the power of 3G for the mobile user. When the Internet first appeared on the scene in 1994 email was the ‘killer app’ that launched its now incredible success and the 2G mobile phones had voice and text to drive forward.
Faris of Talent Imitates Genius Steals fame has written an excellent article for Contagious magazine of the potential killer apps for 3G. Many of them you will have read about on PSFK or IF! but some may well be new to you.
“Whilst the mobile has shown its value as an interaction device for brands, pumping display ads to the handset hasn’t really taken off. That might be about to change thanks to a company called Blyk. Set up by the former president of Nokia, Blyk is a mobile operator for young people that gives you free calls in return for consuming a certain amount of advertising. Whilst it remains to be seen if it takes off, offering free calls to young people, who spend more than 10% of their disposable income on their phones, seems like an interesting place to start.”
