Nokia Philosophy

by Henry Lambert

At the PSFK London conference a couple of weeks ago we heard an interesting talk from Timo Veikkola at Nokia about their approach to designing for society in the future. One of the themes that Timo expanded on was Nokia’s philosophy: face to face is the best way to communicate, only if that’s not possible should the mobile phone be used.

In today’s Financial Times Digital Business supplement the CEO of Nokia, Joia Shillingford, repeats this mantra:

FT: [What's your] favoured communication method?
JS: Face to face continues to be the real thing. If that’s not possible then I usually reach for my [Nokia] Communicator.

Also in the article Joia argues that the companies to watch are Chinese Internet companies. “There are lots of exciting things happening especially in the areas of communities and social networking. And the advertising model is starting to take off.”
